Mental Health Services
for First Responders
Police officers, Paramedics, Firefighters, Physicians, Nurses and emergency room staff, Emergency Dispatchers, and Correctional officers. Every shift, you absorb what others cannot. You are trained to push through, keep it together, and get the job done.
But that training was never designed to carry the full weight of what you see over the course of a career. Over time, that weight accumulates.
CDL & Associates provides confidential, specialized psychological services for first responders in Quinte West, Trenton, Belleville, Northumberland, and across Ontario via telehealth. We understand the culture and the reluctance to ask for help.
Confidential & First-Responder Informed Care
We understand the stigma that can exist in first responder culture around seeking mental health support. Your care at CDL & Associates is completely confidential. We will never contact your employer without your explicit consent.
The Mental Health Reality of First Responder Work
Research consistently shows that first responders have a higher probability or susceptible to anxiety, depression, trauma related disorders, PTSD, and substance use compared to the general population.
This is not a personal weakness. It is the predictable outcome of repeated exposure to trauma, without adequate psychological support or recovery time.
Conditions We Commonly Treat in First Responders
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including complex PTSD from cumulative career-long exposure
- Occupational stress and burnout, the exhaustion that comes from chronic pressure, poor sleep, and emotional depletion
- Depression and anxiety, including disorders that develop gradually over the course of a first responder career
- Substance use, alcohol and other substances used to manage stress, sleep problems, or emotional numbness
- Relationship difficulties, the strain that shift work, hypervigilance, and emotional withdrawal place on family life
- Sleep disorders, including insomnia and disrupted sleep from shift rotation and hyperarousal
How We Treat First Responder Trauma
Our team uses evidence-based approaches specifically validated for first responder populations, including:
- Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), one of the most effective treatments for PTSD, helping you work through trauma-related thoughts without requiring you to relive events in extensive detail
- Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy, structured, gradual exposure to trauma memories to reduce their hold on your daily life
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), building psychological flexibility so you can engage with your life and values, even in the presence of difficult internal experiences
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), practical, structured support for depression, anxiety, and occupational stress
Our team also includes Elizabeth Richardson, RN, CPMHN(C), a Registered Nurse and Psychotherapist with over 20 years of clinical practice in mental health, including experience in acute care settings. She brings a unique understanding of frontline healthcare culture to her work with first responders.
Shift Work, Sleep, and Mental Health
Irregular shift work is one of the most underestimated contributors to first responder mental health struggles. It disrupts circadian rhythms, impairs emotional regulation, and compounds the psychological effects of trauma exposure.
We address sleep as part of overall mental health treatment, not as an afterthought. Improving sleep quality can have a significant positive impact on mood, anxiety, trauma symptoms, and relationships.
Funding & Insurance Coverage for First Responders
Many first responders have access to psychological services through funding sources they may not be fully aware of. These include:
- Employer group benefits, most municipal police, fire, and EMS employers provide extended health benefits that include registered psychologist coverage
- Â
- Ontario Police & Firefighter PTSD Presumptive Legislation, Ontario law provides that PTSD in police and firefighters is presumed work-related, which can support WSIB claims
- Union benefits, many first responder unions provide additional mental health coverage beyond standard employer plans
- Blue Cross and other group insurers, see our Insurance & Funding page for a full breakdown
