Do I Have ADHD? Common Signs in Adults
Adult ADHD rarely looks like you might expect, and can be harder to detect in adults that never received a ADHD diagnosis as a child. For must, adult ADHD symptoms present as a quieter but ever persistent struggles that are often mislabeled as being lazy, anxious, disorganized, or the famous "its just how you are!".
A few common signs of adult ADHD include:
- Chronic procrastination, even on things you might genuinely care about
- Starting projects, leaving them unfinished
- Losing track of time
- Underestimating time required to finish a task
- Feeling overwhelmed by clutter or simple decisions
- Forgetfulness and poor time management
- Intense emotional reaction, especially to criticism, rejection or things out of your control.
- Hyperactive behaviours, such as acting obnoxious, overly sensitive or ranting.Â
- Hyperfocus on things that interest you, while struggling to engage with the things that don't
- Restlessness, racing thoughts, or mental noise that never fully stops
- Anxiety, depression, or burnout that can't be managed
- Substance use, such as cannabis, alcohol, or even caffeine to help "regulate" symptoms
- Self criticism, which is generally exacerbated by the above symptoms
It is important to note, that having one or all of the above listed symptoms, does not necessarily mean you have ADHD. Many of these symptoms can be attributed to other disorders or conditions, but that is why it is important to get a professional adult ADHD assessment. Even if the assessment comes back negative, it can help to determine what the the underlying issues might be and provide a possible diagnosis and treatment recommendations.Â
Why Get Diagnosed as an Adult?
A formal adult ADHD diagnosis changes three things:
1. It gives you clarity and understanding
Many adults experience the symptoms of ADHD, and will continue to struggle in their day to day life, likely blaming themselves for their symptoms. A formal diagnosis changes everything, giving you answers, understanding and clarity about your ADHD, and providing you with the next steps. Many individuals have described the diagnosis to be liberating, as they now have the validation and knowledge required to make a positive change in their life.
2. It opens doors to treatment
Receiving a formal diagnosis from a registered psychologist is typically required by a physician or psychiatrist in order to provide you with ADHD medication. It also allows for access to ADHD-specific therapies and treatment that are highly effective when properly applied.
3. It unlocks accommodations and supports
Under the Ontario Human Rights Code, a ADHD diagnosis is grounds for workplace accommodations. Even at the post-secondary level, it is required to access accommodations such as extended exam time, note-taking support, and custom deadlines. Most insurance and disability assistance programs will also require a formal diagnosis from a registered psychologist in order to receive coverage.
A Diagnosis Is a Starting Point, Not a Label
A common worry for many individuals is that a diagnosis will define them. In our experience, the opposite is true. Understanding how your brain works gives you the ability to work with it, rather than against it.
ADHD Assessment Wait Times in Ontario
Wait times for an adult ADHD assessment in Ontario's public healthcare system is a known challenge. Depending on your region or referral, the wait can be as long as 6-18 months, quite possibly taking even longer.Â
The reason for this is quite simple; in recent years, there has been a dramatic surge in demand, and the number of psychologists trained to conduct adult ADHD assessments has not kept pace. This means, for many, the wait time can be years, and during this time, there are no answers, pharmaceutical intervention, or necessary accommodations that could make a significant impact on your quality of life.Â
The answer, get a private assessment for us. At CDL & Associates, most adult ADHD assessments are completed in 4 - 6 weeks, and includes an initial consultation, intake, assessment testing, to the final report which includes a formal diagnosis from a registered psychologist. Â
